The Best Makeup Products for a Busy Mum

Today marks the start of my new Friday series, 'Mum & Style'.  I hope you find these posts useful!

As a busy Mum you feel that you don't have time to do anything, let alone put on makeup in the morning.  No matter how many hours there are in the day there just never seems to be enough and the lists of tasks is endless.  Mix that up with your career (if you head out to work), or if you happen to work from home (like I do), or even if you don't....there is just no time to spend fussing about with makeup.  Getting kids ready for school, making lunches, getting them out the door, kids to kinder, pre-schoolers demanding all your time, washing, cleaning, cooking....I could easily go on.  Somewhere in all that madness you just can't waste half an hour making yourself gorgeous.

Unfortunately, what can happen, is that we can let ourselves go, and as a result can start to feel frumpy and even grumpy (didn't mean to make that rhyme...) because we don't look our best and find ourselves getting annoyed that we always have to come last.

This has to change.  To vastly improve your mood, and show yourself some of the love that you deserve, you need to spend a little time each day on yourself, and if taking a quick ten minutes to put on some makeup is the way to do it, then run with it.

I personally never used to wear makeup, but it's only been in the last year that I have bothered, and it's for that reason.  I wasn't spending any time looking after myself.  As well as looking a little more fresh faced, it is nice to devote a little time to myself, even if my kids are bashing at the bathroom door while I'm doing it.  So what do I find are the best products to use to give myself a speedy spruce up?
I've never been big on foundation, it's only been recently that I have invested in some, and that is really only for when I do my outfit shoots for the blog, although I may wear it if I go out somewhere special.  The rest of the time I either just slap on my usual moisturiser, or I wear a BB cream or a tinted moisturiser.  I have been using this 'Earth Cream' by Dusty Girls, which has been great.  I also picked up this Tinted Moisturiser by Natio at the chemist a little while ago and used it for the first time today, and I must say, I really like this.  It blends in perfectly, is the exact match of my skin tone and doesn't make my skin look dry at all.  These sorts of products are great for a busy mum because you don't have to spend as much time getting them perfect.  I find they don't leave a nasty line around the jaw, and often now they have a sunscreen in them too.  This Natio one has SPF 50, which is awesome!  Today my skin looks really dewy and fresh, without looking too oily, plus it's hidden the old crow's feet a little (!) and it took me about a minute to apply.  A nice, even skin tone is really all you need.
Once again, you want something that is super quick.  If it's too much hassle you're not going to have time or even be bothered, so keep it simple.  Most days you might just want a slick of mascara and that is it when it comes to your eyes.  I have dark lashes anyway, so sometimes I don't even bother with that, but it does make a difference to the length, and different ones make my lashes look a lot thicker, which is nice.  I like my 'Dusty Girls' mascara for everyday.  It's made from natural ingredients and seriously doesn't clump.  My 'Black Argan Oil' mascara by Josie Maran I find is better for going out as it is a bit thicker.  I will bother with eyeshadow when I am going somewhere, even during the day.  I stick to my neutral 'Chocolate Bar' palette by Too Faced which has all the beige/brown shades I could ever need.  There are three shades I generally use, a soft creamy colour I put all over the lid and almost up to my brows, then a soft pinky beige on my lids, followed by a darker shade on the outside corners of my lids which I will blend in.  I find this highlights the green in my eyes and makes a huge difference to the overall look of my face.  Instead of zombie I look a lot more alive.  It doesn't take long, perhaps 3 minutes total.
Lips are super quick, so if you can't manage anything else for the day this is where you can at least pop some colour on your face in a flash.  It's also easy to do on the run as well, although I don't recommend putting it on while you're driving.  As well as being highly dangerous you can also end up with stripes across your face...which is great if you're a tiger but otherwise...not so much.  Lip stains are perfect here.  A bold lipstick can be a bit dressy, plus you need a mirror.  I like lip crayons for the days I want just that little bit of extra colour, and on really 'non-event' kind of days a simple lip balm adds a little shine and moisture.

A good cleanser that you can use in the shower will be the easiest way to get your makeup off at the end of the day, and it will make it much quicker.  If you're anything like me you are the last to have a shower and fall exhausted into bed, so this type of light, simple makeup makes it easy at the other end too.

Too Faced Sweethearts

I went away on the weekend as my husband had to go 'up north' shearing, so this time he decided to take me and the kids, which was lovely as it was great to get away, and I got to visit my sister in-law and three nephews.

Then a travesty occurred.

Somehow in transit my blush exploded and ended up in a big fragmented mess all over the bathroom floor.  I was suitably sad and gave my Natio Mineral Blush in 'Pink Apples' a fitting burial of sorts, (dumped it in the bin) and quickly realised I would have to purchase a replacement. (*clap hands in glee)

So jumping on my favourite online makeup and beauty store Mecca I decided that I just had to have this one...
...the 'Sweethearts Perfect Flush Blush in Candy Glow' by Too Faced.  I'm a sucker for pretty packaging, and I always figure if you are going to buy a product you might as well get something that is fun and lovely to look at.  I mean...why not!
Encased in this cute cardboard heart shaped box it is a soft pink blush with a trio of shades that blend to create a light pink flush which can suit any skin tone all year round.  Purchasing this online, this was the safest shade to go for as I wasn't able to try it out.
Liking a more natural look this shade of 'Candy Glow' is perfect for me.
What is your favourite brand of blush?

Montana West Handbag

I've been loving my new handbag.  But then who doesn't love a new handbag?!  I haven't had a new one in a while, although I'm not counting the gi-normous nappy bag I got for my birthday at the start of last year....which just isn't the same...something that is going to hold mountains of wipes and nappies and bottles and random toys is hardly glamorous.

This bag is very glamorous.

I had no intention of buying it actually, and I wasn't sure about the whole fringe thing, but then it really grew on me.  I had wandered into my favourite country clothing store, Gippsland Country Outfitters, and there was this gorgeous bag plus another one that was way more 'blingy'.   Wandering around the store, admiring all the shirts and trying on a few gorgeous Wrangler jeans, I still kept being drawn back to these bags.

I'm sorry...but I just couldn't help myself!  I ummed and ahhed between the two but decided that the 'bling' was just too much 'bling' for me (since I'm not very 'blingy' at all), and even though it was beautiful, I went the safer option and chose this one.  My logic was that I might end up being too scared to use the one with the 'bling' and it would live it's days out 'blinging' away quietly to itself in my wardrobe.  Can I say 'bling' one more time??  .....'bling'.

So, giving my new bag, and my new camera a run, I went out and took some shots....(and learned how to use the timer on my camera).
Why am I always so serious in selfies??

I think probably because I feel a little ridiculous taking photos of myself....

Hmmm...anyway...
These are a pair of favourite jeans by Ariat by the way.  I love the red, cream and yellow stitching detail on the back pockets.  My shirt is one I've had for years and is by Wrangler.  I'm wearing it open over a white singlet I picked up for $3 from Kmart.  My cowboy boots are Ariats.  I love my boots and wear them almost every day.
I think here I was checking that the kids hadn't run away.
I really like the silver details on the bag.  On the reverse it also has a handy zip pocket, plus it has a smaller pocket to fit your mobile phone.  This doesn't have a zip, but you want quick access to your phone anyway.  I know I do because I'm clumsy and have trouble answering a touch screen.  I'm such a doofus.

You can visit Montana West here and drool over their range of gorgeous bags, wallets, accessories, home décor and apparel.  What a pity (for my husband) that I discovered this website......

Any hoo...  here is a close up of my makeup if you are interested..
Oooo...I look so grumpy!  I think I might have had to yell at the kids just before I took this one.  They were throwing their toys out the car window.  My eye shadow is from my lovely Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette that I have already mentioned in a previous post and my lipstick is by Cowgirl Dirt and is the colour 'Tea Rose'.

I took these photos just south of my town.  We took a drive around a few back roads to find a nice secluded quiet spot.  On the way home I took this shot.
This is the view North and the hazy mountains in the background are the Baw Baw's.  The town nestled in the groove there is where I live!  Pretty sweet hey?!

Chocolate Heaven

Two things I love....gorgeous packaging and beauty products...and chocolate!

Never would I have ever dreamed that I would find these two things combined.  But...scrolling through Mecca (awesome online beauty store) I found this....
And when it arrived in the mail only a couple of days later....and I took it out of this incredible box that makes it look like a candy bar out of the original 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' movie..., I discovered this...
I know!  I know exactly what you are you thinking!  What the....!!!!  It's NOT edible..but it sure as sheep looks it.  It's actually tin so it feels really nice in your hand and it's quite large too...as big as an actually chocolate bar really, so if my husband goes to brush his teeth one day and comes out of the bathroom with this in his hand, wondering why the hell I have mistaken the pantry for the bathroom cupboard...I would not blame him at all.  (However if he tries to take a bite out of it I will be a little worried.)

Inside it gets even more glorious...
There's a nifty little protective piece of plastic over the eye shadow colours (YES!!  It's an EYE SHADOW PALETTE!!  Ha!), which lists all the delicious colours, which include things like White Chocolate, Black Forest Truffle, Triple Fudge, Cherry Cordial, Crème Brulee, Strawberry Bon Bon and Candid Violet...to name a few.  It's insane.

And what's more....holy Underwear Batman...it SMELLS of chocolate!!  I'm in heaven.

The product itself is really lovely and after about twenty minutes of mucking about with all the colours I am happy with my purchase.  It wasn't the cheapest eye shadow I have ever bought but it makes up for it because it's just so gorgeous, and all of the colours, (the browns, nudes, pinks and even the purple shade) are perfect for my sludgy brown/green goopy coloured eyes.  Basically, what I am saying, is that these colours highlight the green and my eyes look purrr-ty!

I also bought a little cutesy Rebecca Bonbon lip gloss, basically because if I hit the $75 mark I got free shipping...so it actually worked out better to get an extra product and pay a certain amount than pay the same amount for one product plus shipping (if that makes sense).

Here tis..
I had a little test...popping a bit on my finger before applying it to my lips, and it is your usual run of the mill nice shiny lip gloss.  It has a nice sweet smell but is very sticky.  I am thinking it would be good as a gift for a niece who is in her tween's, because it is the sort of thing that young girls like when they first start dabbling in make up.  It's more fun than glamour, certainly, but fun is good!

Has anyone else discovered any really delicious make up products lately??!
